MAN Rollo is your business and service partner for Burckhardt Compression.
Burckhardt Compression is your partner for all crosshead piston compressors in the field of oil refining, chemical and petrochemical industries, air separation, as well as gas transport and storage.
Next you can find the different piston compressors Burckhardt Compression can offer you which include Laby®, Process and Hyper.
What is the Laby®? In brief, the Laby® compresses bone-dry, dirty, abrasive and other gases with no contamination and without oil. It can attain a discharge pressure of up to 300 bar (4350 psi), flow up to 11'000 Nm3/h (6500 scfm) and shaft power up to 2100 kW (2800 HP).
This is an extremely reliable machine with unexcelled availability, combining high performance with a unique cooling system. The Laby® easily manages the compression of LNG boil-off gas at suction temperatures down to minus 160°C (250 F).
Design Features:
- Labyrinth sealing system on piston and piston rod gland
- Non-lubricated cylinder section (no oil required, no contamination of the gas and contaminated gas does not harm compressor operation)
- Vertical piston rod guiding arrangement
- Lubricated piston guiding system for precise alignment and long life
- Top quality compressor valves for high reliability
- Standard executions available with: open distance piece; closed and purged distance piece; gas-tight crankcase (zero leakage); gas- and pressure-tight crankcase (zero leakage)
Applications:
- Industrial gas industry
- Steel industry
- Chemical industry
- Product pipelines
- Food and beverage industry
- Refrigeration and cryogenic installations
- Boil-off gas handling
- LNG boil-off gas
- Oil and gas industry
- Petrochemical industry
- Polymer production
- Ethylene oxide / glycol
What is the process gas compressor? In brief, the process gas compressor is available oil-free or lubricated, horizontal or vertical, according to API 618 specifications for hydrogen, hydrocarbons and corrosive gases. It can attain a discharge pressure of up to 1'000 bar (15,000 psi), flow up to 100'000 Nm3/h (65,000 scfm), power up to 9'700 kW (13,000 HP).

What is the hyper compressor? In brief, the hyper compressor is a high-pressure reciprocating compressor for low density polyethylene plants. It can attain a discharge pressure of up to 3500 bar (50,000 psi), flow from 40'- 160'000 kg/h, and shaft power up to 35'000 kW (47,000 HP).
The world's most powerful compressor, driven by a 24'500 kW (32,800 HP) electric motor and capable of compressing up to 116 tons/hr of ethylene to a discharge pressure of up to 3100 bar (45,000 psi), was built by our company in 1999.
Design Features:
- Rugged motion work with low specific loads for long operating life
- Simple and robust design
- Easy access to moveable parts
- Distance piece between motion work and cylinder prevents gas from entering crankcase with a safety device to prevent crankcase damage
- Three different frame sizes available to minimise the number of cylinders in operation
- Lube oil held in separate tank for safe operation
- Auxiliary crosshead for enhanced guidance of high pressure plungers thus prolonging packing life and safe operation
- Highly available type of compressor (crucial for continuous process operation)
- Quick replacement of cartridge-type cylinder inserts
Applications:
- Low density polyethylene production (high pressure process)
Duties:
- Ethylene
- Ethylene vinyl acetate
- Co-monomers
